Why Are Regular Dental Checkups & Cleanings Important?
Regular dental visits can seem needless when your mouth feels fine. Even so, you should make time for them to avoid serious downsides.
The truth is that dental checkups and cleanings help you avoid big oral problems. When you attend them, they remove the built-up plaque and bacteria that can cause cavities and gum disease. The sessions also detect and treat minor issues before anything worse occurs. As a result, they reduce your risk of toothaches, tooth loss, and similar conditions.
Of course, checkups and cleanings also save you time and money. Each visit is quick (only an hour or so) and normally gets full coverage from dental insurance. To that extent, skipping them would force you to get costly and time-consuming treatments (root canals, tooth extractions, etc.) later.
What to Expect During a Dental Checkup
Here at Plush Dentistry, you should expect a dental checkup to include:
- An Oral Exam – Our practice starts each checkup with an oral exam, which assesses your teeth, bite, and existing dental work. This examination also looks for signs of oral cancer.
- Dental X-rays – We take dental X-rays about once a year, ensuring we know if you have oral problems beneath the surface.
- Medical History Review – Our team may review your medical history and medications during your checkup. After all, some medicines can affect your long-term oral health.
- Custom Treatment Plan(s) – We’ll draft a treatment plan (based on a solid diagnosis) if we find any issues during the oral exam. From there, our dentists will lay things out step-by-step.
- A Brief Q&A – We’ll gladly answer your treatment questions near the end of your visit.
What to Expect During a Dental Cleaning
Even daily brushing and flossing can’t solve everything, so we perform teeth cleanings after each checkup. Each of them features:
- Effective Cleaning – Using special instruments, a dental hygienist will remove the plaque (and tartar) between your teeth and along your gum line.
- A Quick Polish – We’ll polish your teeth after the main cleaning to help them shine. That way, your smile will be rid of minor stains.
- Some Flossing – At some point, a hygienist will floss between your teeth. This step should get rid of plaque that we may have missed earlier.
- Fluoride Treatment – As a finishing touch for your cleaning, we may apply a fluoridated gel to your teeth. This material will bond to your smile and protect it from decay and cavities.
