Try These 5 Resolutions for a Healthier Smile in the New Year

List of goals for 2025

It seems like 2024 just flew by, and now 2025 is right around the corner! You are probably thinking about all of your hopes and goals for the new year. Like many people, your resolutions might center on self-improvement. While you are making a list of things you want to accomplish, do not forget your oral health! Here are some suggestions that could help you achieve a healthier smile:

Brush Up on Your Brushing Habits

You may already brush your teeth twice a day, and that is commendable. But are you brushing in the most effective way? You should:

  • Brush for two full minutes, spending about 30 seconds in each quadrant of your mouth.
  • Use a soft brush.
  • Be sure to clean around your gumline.

Do Not Forget to Floss

Flossing is very important, but sadly, it is one of the most neglected dental care habits. You should try to floss at least once a day, preferably as part of your evening oral hygiene routine. Old-fashioned string floss is most effective, but you can also get some benefits from a water flosser or floss picks. Try putting your flossing tools on your bathroom counter (instead of in a drawer) so you have a visual reminder to get it done.

Make Nutritious Food Choices

Just like the rest of your body, your teeth and gums need certain nutrients in order to stay healthy and strong. For example, teeth need calcium, vitamin D, and phosphorous. Your gums can benefit from antioxidants. Try to prioritize whole foods, along with fruits and veggies, as you are designing your meal plans for the new year. (Just remember, some fruits —such as citrus items — are very acidic and should only be enjoyed in moderation.) It can also be beneficial to start cutting back on the amount of sugar you consume.

Stop Using Tobacco Products

This is the most difficult resolution suggested in this blog post. If you currently use cigarettes or other tobacco products, they might have a strong hold on you. However, it is worth every effort you make to quit! Doing so will lower your risk of dry mouth, gum disease, bad breath, and a range of other oral health problems. Your primary care physician may be able to provide practical suggestions to help you conquer your tobacco habit.

Visit Your Dentist

For optimum oral health, you should visit your dentist twice a year for a cleaning and checkup. Try to schedule an appointment early in 2025 and another one sometime in the summer. These routine visits can do much to reduce your risk of cavities and gum disease!
