With the arrival of 2023, you may be considering some New Year’s resolutions. After all, January is a great time to map out long-term projects for self-improvement. That said, you should make sure to add “better oral health” to your list of goals. If you start toward it now, you can show off a dazzling smile for nearly the whole year. As for how to accomplish this task, your local Frisco dentist has some suggestions. Here are five New Year’s resolutions that’ll bring you healthier, shinier teeth.
Practice Daily Flossing
Even if you know you should floss daily, there’s a good chance you don’t. Well, now’s as good a time as any to develop the habit!
You see, regular flossing does more than you might think. Aside from getting “leftovers” out of your mouth, it also drastically lowers your risk of gum disease and tooth decay. Plus, this practice can even freshen your breath.
Avoid Acidic Drinks
Perhaps you find acidic beverages — sodas, sports drinks, etc. — tasty. You shouldn’t have too many of them, though, as they’ll hurt your teeth. More specifically, their acids erode enamel and cause cavities.
As a resolution, try to limit your intake of these drinks. For example, reduce to no more than one daily if you usually drink more. If you only ever have one per day, go down to one every other day.
Brush for the Full Two Minutes
Dentists suggest brushing your teeth twice daily for two minutes. Done consistently, you’d be surprised at the results — less bleeding, a brighter smile, etc.
To build the habit of two-minute brushing, use a timer or another clock tool. You could also try singing a timing song. Any method is fine, really, if it helps you reach two minutes!
Quit Smoking
Quitting smoking is an excellent oral health resolution. Tobacco products are terrible for teeth, as they discolor your smile and increase your risk of gum disease and tooth loss. Smoking also makes it harder to get dental implants successfully.
Admittedly, it’s not easy to quit smoking once you’ve started. Still, your dentist will gladly provide you with the necessary support and resources.
Reduce Snacking
Cut down on snacks if you want to protect your teeth and slim down your waistline. Between-meal eating helps harmful oral bacteria grow, producing more acids that attack your teeth.
As an alternative to snacks, stick to eating three well-balanced meals daily. The latter option keeps you full and does more good for your smile.
Ultimately, 2023 could be the year your teeth get healthier and better looking. Therefore, make that dream happen with the resolutions above!
